1. Zermatt, Switzerland
While it’s pretty challenging to choose from the many outstanding ski resorts in Switzerland, Zermatt just about pips the competition. Thanks to its high altitude, skiing is possible throughout the summer, as well as in winter. It’s the highest summer ski resort in Europe. As home to 360km of pistes and a snow park for keen freestylers and snowboarders, it makes for an excellent choice all year round.
2. Méribel, France
Lying within the famous Trois Vallees ski area, Méribel is one of Europe’s most popular ski destinations, and we can see why. The area is home to 335 marked runs spanning over 600km, 180 lifts and more than 100km of cross-country trails. Plus, with family-friendly activities, 2km of toboggan runs and two snow parks, there’s plenty to do. The cherry on the top? Back in 1992, Méribel hosted the Winter Olympics, if it’s good enough for the pro’s, it’s good enough for us.
3. Niseko, Japan
Niseko is one of the most popular ski resorts in Japan. Located on the northern island of Hokkaido, the much-loved resort boasts spectacular views over the dormant volcano, Mount Yotei. The resort is linked to another three resorts which comprise over 800 acres of skiable terrain between them. The international pull of Niseko means that at night, it transforms into a melting pot of nationalities, making for an enjoyable après-ski experience. Plus, with natural hot springs around the mountains, chilling out should be on your itinerary too.
4. Valle Nevado, Chile
Just a day trip away from the capital of Santiago, Valle Nevado is an excellent option for all kinds of skiers, from beginners to hardcore adrenaline junkies. Located in the foothills of the Andes mountain range, Valle Nevado is home to around 800 hectares of skiable grounds. After opening in the late eighties, the resort has been growing ever since. Today, it boasts excellent powder skiing, plus the opportunity to experience heli-skiing and plenty of fine wine.
5. Whistler, Canada
As Canada’s most loved ski resort, Whistler welcomes more than two million visitors every year. The British Colombia ski resort hosted the Winter Olympics back in 2010, meaning the facilities were updated with plenty of investment pumped into the resort. The ski area, which makes up 8,000 acres is one of the biggest in the world, plus Whistler village is home to some pretty lively après-ski options. With that said, the quaint little village is great for families too. It ticks boxes for everyone of all ages.
6. Vail, Colorado, USA
As one of the biggest ski resorts in the US, the skiable area of Vail spans over 5,000 hectares. Spread across three areas boasting 193 runs suited to all abilities, it’s a fantastic family-friendly resort. With a superpipe, two snow parks and plenty of other attractions too, you’ll never be short of things to do in Vail.
